Hermit House

This house was built by its inhabitant to retreat from urban life and spent his remaining days under the water level of the Rotte, the small 'river' that gave Rotterdam its name. The shape of the house follows the river's flow direction, at night the underwater windows are visible. A hatch located in a quay connected to the house serves as the entrance to the dwelling. The house is built using urban driftwood: wood found in parks and along lanes, in canals and on pavements.
