About

Laurens Kolks (Zwolle 1976) gained work experience as an intern at Diller Scofidio + Renfro architects, obtained a bachelor's degree in Industrial Design at Design Academy Eindhoven (1999), and a master's degree in Sociology at Erasmus University Rotterdam (2018, cum laude). Kolks' design work focusses on spatial projects in public spaces, his research and writing address subjects at the intersection of sociology and design.

The scale of his designs ranges from furniture and set designs to complete interiors and buildings. Laurens' work was exhibited in the Netherlands and abroad (e.g., Finland, Hungary, Italy, Japan and Norway). His work was nominated and awarded on several occasions (Show Us The Data competition 2017 - 2nd prize, Forbo Linoleum Award YD+I 2002 and Young Design Award 1999).

Laurens is a teacher and lecturer at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering - Delft University of Technology, and has been a teacher at St. Joost School of Art & Design since 2008. He has worked as a guest lecturer at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, MA+U Tilburg, Willem de Kooning Academy and SUPSI, Lugano. He was a researcher at the Centre of Applied Research for Art, Design and Technology - Avans University of Applied Sciences.

Laurens is a PhD candidate at Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Erasmus University Rotterdam. His research investigates how particular design practices – through the design of objects, environments, systems and services – partake in the entanglement of the social and the material to articulate public issues. Regarding the involvement of design practices with public and moral issues, Kolks' research seeks to gain insight into how various design approaches contribute to public engagement with collective concerns.
